Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic principles of electron microscopy and chemical microanalysis from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view. The following topics will be discussed at the lectures:
-main types of electron microscopes
-advantages/disadvantages of electron microanalysis (of chemical composition)
-principles and construction of an electron microscope (vacuum system, electron gun, electron optics, etc.)
-interaction of the sample surface with a beam of accelerated electrons (production of SE, BSE, X-ray radiation, etc.)
-detectors of BSE, SE, CL, EDS, WDS, etc.
-principles of EDS analysis
-principles of WDS analysis
-quantification of chemical composition, ZAF correction
-sample preparation, graphite or gold coating, etc.)
The course includes practical exercises of:
- working on an electron microscope with EDS analyzer (observation of the sample (and acquiring) in SE, BSE and EDS chemical microanalysis)
-working on an electron microprobe with WDS analyzer (preliminary EDS analysis, WDS calibration, quantitative WDS analysis, WDS elemental maps and profiles, point microanalysis)
-carbon/gold coating
Learning outcomes
After completing this course the student will be familiar with the basic principles of electron microscopy and microanalysis. He/she will also be able to operate an electron microscope after completing the course.
