Course objectives
This course is a logical counterpart of the lecture Structure and Reactivity. The main objective of the course is acquainting students with the details of the mechanisms of chemical transformations. The course discusses the physico-chemical methods which are used for the mechanism elucidation.
Syllabus
  • 1. Art of writing the reaction mechanism. 2. How chemistry studies the reaction mechanisms. 3. Reactive intermediates. Radicals, carbebes, nitrenes etc. 4. Pericylic reactions. Selection rules. 5. Nucleophilic aliphatic and aromatic substitution. 6. Eliminations. 7. Electrophilic aromatic substitution. 8. Additions to C=C bond. 9. Reactions of carbonyl compounds 10. Rearrangements. 11. Free radical reactions. 12. Oxidation and reductions. 13. Transient metal catalysis. 14. Photochemical reactions.
