C7777 Handling chemicals
Basic knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry. Writing chemical equations, stoichiometric calculations, and calculations of solution concentration and mixing will be used extensively.

Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to: practice basic laboratory operations (filtration, crystallization, distillation, extraction, sublimation, volumetric methods); use basic methods of determination of physicochemical constants of compounds; apply basic chemistry calculations in laboratory praxis.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, laboratory and equipment, guidelines for laboratory work and writing reports, safety rules. Pass-requirements. 2. Filtration, extraction, simple distillation, distillation under reduced pressure, determination of the refractive index 3. Preparation of buffers, pH measurement, isolation of trimyristine from nutmeg 4. Separation of the KAl(SO4)2.12H2O + CuSO4.5H2O + Cr2O3 mixture. 5. Preparation of H2SO4 volumetric solution, volumetric measurement of the molarity, density of the solution 6. Preparation of CuSO4.5H2O 7. Manganometric, chelatometric titration 8. Preparation of Cu(II) complex 9. Preparation of paracetamol, melting point, TLC 10. Extraction of plant pigments, preparation of terc-butylchloride 11. Isolation of caffeine from tea leaves 12. Preparation of 2-chlorbenzoic acid

Assessment methods
In-term tests to check an understanding of each completed laboratory exercise and related principles and calculations (stoichiometry, concentrations, titrations). Laboratory reports on all exercises.
