- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain principles of zoological systematics; prove knowledge of major invertebrate and vertebrate taxa; extend acquired knowledge of their phylogenesis, morphology and life history during following studies.
- Syllabus
- Principles of zoological systematics - alternative concepts, basics of phylogenetic systematics. Archezoa, Protozoa (independent regnae): brief overview of the major groups and the question of phylogenetic validity. Animalia (Metazoa) - phylogenesis and characteristics of major taxa on the Phylum level and selected taxa of subordinate levels. "Invertebrates": Porifera; Placozoa; Cnidaria; Ctenophora; Platyhelminthes; Bryozoa; Rotifera; Acanthocephala; Gastrotricha; Nemertea; Sipunculida; Annelida; Mollusca; Brachyozoa; Cephalorhyncha; Nematoda; Nematomorpha; Tardigrada; Onychophora; (Eu)Arthropoda; Echinodermata. Phylum Chordata, characteristics, origin and evolution. Subphylum Tunicata, subphylum Acrania - basic characteristics and morphology. Subphylum Vertebrata - characteristics and system. Supraclass Agnatha - characteristics, living Cyclostomata. Suprafamily Gnathostomata - characteristics; primarily aquatic Gnathostomata, Chondrichthyes, Pisces - morphology, ecology and system. Amphibians, reptiles - morphology, ecology, system, adaptations to terrestrial life. Birds - morphology and system, adaptations to flight. Mammals - morphology, ecology and system.
