Course objectives
At the end this course, students should be able to: - understand and explain dissimilarity between prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms - comprehend relationship among microorganisms - elucidate relation amongst microorganisms and environment - document contribution of microorganisms to environmental changes - illustrate use of microorganisms in biotechnology
Syllabus
  • Main groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria, archaea and fungi, their phylogenetic position. Prokaryotic microorganisms - bacteria and archaea, prokaryotic cell, significant taxonomic groups and their ecology. Motility and chemotaxis of bacteria. Sporulation. Eukaryotic microorganisms - fungi (molds and yeasts) - structure and function of the cell, ecology and significance. Viruses - structure and function of virus particles, life cycle, important representatives. Microbial nutrition, growth and control - life cycle of prokaryotic cell, growth curve, kinetics of bacterial growth. Influence of environmental factors on growth - temperature, pH, extreme environment, adaptation of microorganisms, antimicrobial agents, antibiotics and mechanisms of their effect, disinfection and sterilization. Metabolism of microorganisms - bacteria and archaea - nutrition and energetic metabolism, anabolism. Nitrogen fixation, methanogenesis, production of secondary metabolites. Metabolism of chemolithotrophs and photosynthetic microorganisms. Genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms - specific characteristics of prokaryotic organisms. Transfer of genetic information by prokaryotic organisms - transformation, conjugation, transduction. Plasmids. Microorganisms in biotechnology and genetic engineering. Quorum sensing. Microorganisms in the environment. Microflora of human body. Microbial diseases and their control. Factors of virulence. Important infection diseases. Microorganisms in agriculture and industry - food, chemical industry, waste management.
