Course objectives
The main goal of the practical course is to make students familiar with verified methods of investigation and conservation/restoration of artefacts made of ceramics, glass and stone. Students will be acquainted with points of view that influence the selection of a treatment method, effect of agents and properties of single materials. Entire work will be described in a proper conservation report. Advanced techniques of treatment of artefacts made of inorganic materials (plasma) will be presented during excursions.
Learning outcomes
Students will be familiar with common conservation processes of artefacts made of inorganic materials such as ceramics, stone and glass. Advanced techniques of treatment of artefacts made of these materials will be presented.
Syllabus
  • 1) Conservation and restoration of ceramics - examination, cleaning, consolidation, gluing, filling, retouches
  • 2) Conservation and restoration of stone - examination, cleaning, consolidation, gluing, filling, retouches
  • 3) Conservation of glass - examination, cleaning and gluing
  • 4) Fabrication of combined plaster and lucopren mould
  • 5) Plaster and artificial stone fabrication. Surface and mass colouring
  • 6) Instrumental analytical techniques in the analysis of pigments
  • 7) Cleaning and conservation of mineralogical samples designated for collection purposes
  • 8) Utilization of plasma pencil for surface treatment of various materials
  • 9) Utilization of low-pressure hydrogen plasma for reduction of corrosion formed on metallic objects
