Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to acquire basic methods used in biotechnology. In practical exercises, students will be familiarized with the procedures typical for developing and realizing the biotechnology process in a bioreactor with subsequent purification of the product.
Learning outcomes
Students will know the basic principles of applying selected methods used in biotechnology and use different methods for further experimental work in biotechnology and related fields.
Syllabus
  • Preparation of laboratory benchtop and semi-operational bioreactor for culturing of microorganisms. Batch and fed-batch cultivation of microorganisms. Monitoring of important bioprocess parameters such as pO2, OD, pH, and temperature. Production of recombinant protein using microbial expression system and subsequent purification of a target protein by FPLC.

Teaching methods
Individually supervised laboratory course.
Assessment methods
Compulsory participation during the block course. Compulsory participation in a one-day excursion in a biotechnology company. Compulsory participation at the final seminar, where students comment on their results in the form of a presentation.
