Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students the knowledge about regional policy in the European Union and the Czech Republic. This course follows the subject of Regional Policy and Regional Development, which is more focused on the theoretical level, while this course introduces the students to the development and current status of regional policy in practice. The second half of the course focuses on agriculture as one of the main aspects of EU regional policy.
Learning outcomes
Student completing the course will be able to:
- acquaint in European and national policy of regional development,
- acquaint in the European Structural and Investment Funds,
- identify the basic features of the Common Agricultural Policy
- create strategic documents at the local level,
- apply theoretical knowledge about regional development to practice.

  • 1) Regional policy of the European Union - development, current status, instruments
  • 2) European structural and investment funds with an emphasis on period 2014–2020
  • 3) Regional policy of the Czech Republic, Strategy of the Regional Development of the Czech Republic and other documents
  • 4) Territorial dimensions, integrated instruments (ITI, ITDP and CLLD)
  • 5) Strategic and development documents at local and regional level
  • 6) The process of creating strategic and development documents, an example of a specific procedure
  • 7) Relations between general and agricultural regional policy, EU regional policy in relation to agriculture - current status and perspectives
  • 8) Concept of agrarian policy of the Czech Republic before and after accession to the EU
  • 9) Agriculture and Rural Development Plan, EAFRD
  • 10) Definition and evaluation of agricultural regions through criteria in EU countries, in the Czech Republic, LFA regions
  • 11) Opportunities and conditions of regional development, support of non-productive functions
  • 12) Rural Development Programme of the Czech Republic for period 2007–2013, 2014–2020

Teaching methods
Teaching course is created by two-hour lectures and one-hour exercises on which the knowledge and skills gained from the lectures are disseminated. Within exercises the emphasis is placed on students' discussion, respectively on active involvement in the process of the exercise in general. Students elaborate continuously on homework. They will be involved, among other things, in the creation of a particular strategic document.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an oral exam from findings learned during the lectures. To participate in the exam, students must have granted credit for exercise, which gets under appropriate attendance and consignet and recognized tasks (ie. work on own exercises and homework).
