Course objectives
The aim of the course is to direct students´ attention to the theories and models concerning career counselling with the emphasis put on the system theory and social constructivism; to strengthen the students´ ability to critical evaluate the theories and models and to link them to the position of the career counsellor within the changing society. The course embraces also the training in selected techniques and skills in career counselling (role playing). In the end the students would orient themselves in the field of the theories and models of the career counselling and be able to use components of the selected approaches connected with this theories and models in the practise including also the planning of their career development and reflection of process and their own competencies and limits in this field.
Syllabus
  • Career counselling - introduction, history, definition, trends, the role of the counsellor
  • Theory of career decision making and growth: theories oriented to the content (Parsons, Holland, Brown), process (Ginzberg, Super) and to the content and process (Roe, Krumboltz, Lent, Brown, Hackett)
  • Social constructivism (Peavy, Amundson)
  • Communication: active listening skills, verbal and nonverbal communication, feedback
  • Phases of the counselling process, selected techniques
  • Assessment centre
