Course objectives
The aim of the course is: - To introduce medication errors as one of the problems of contemporary health care from different perspectives to undergraduate students of medical, but especially non-medical disciplines, and thus broaden their horizons. - To promote awareness, the importance of vigilance of all participants, including the patient, and the importance of established prevention systems, all in the context of human health. - To support students in transferring the knowledge of their parent discipline outside of it, in skills of interdisciplinary collaboration, in working with information resources, critical thinking, and evaluation.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - define medication errors in general, give some examples; - define the risk places in the process of handling medicines (where errors can occur, who makes errors most often and why), suggest preventive measures, especially from the perspective of the field of study; - explain the concept of evidence-based medicine; - propose points of patient involvement in the prevention and management of medication errors; - critically evaluate sources of information; - provide effective feedback.

  • 1. Medication process, medication errors 2. Risk points of medication preparation and administration 3. Interdisciplinary collaboration - therapeutic drug monitoring, screening tests 4. Interdisciplinary collaboration - process automation as a key to preventing human error 5. Interdisciplinary collaboration - legal aspects 6. Interdisciplinary collaboration - how to communicate errors 7. Drug interactions and drug incompatibilities as another type of medication errors 8. Evidence-based medicine 9. Involving the patient as an active player in the process of identifying and reporting medication errors
Teaching methods
Blended-classroom lessons: 1) Independent preparation before the lesson (approx. 45 minutes): self-study of the text in the Interactive Syllabi in IS, working on practical tasks and application exercises, peer review. 2) Synchronous face-to-face lesson (approx. 45 minutes - according to the schedule): lesson with the teacher, analysis of completed assignments, peer review. Completion of additional professional information.
Assessment methods
During the semester: completing at least 3 Homework Vaults assignments and completing at least 3 peer reviews (out of 9 course topics, each student submits or reviews a total of 6 assignments). As part of the final assessment, each student is required to submit a short essay (150-300 words in length) on the assigned topic and to conduct assessments of 2 other essays submitted by their classmates.
