- Course objectives
- The subject presents a part of theoretical fundamentals of the study. It provides fundamental understanding and skills useful for quantitative reasoning of life science.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able to:
Understand basic concepts and theories of linear algebra, combinatorics and probability theory, fundamentals of univariate differential and integral calculi;
Solve simple problems arising in the mentioned areas of mathematics. - Syllabus
- Set theory, sets of numbers.
- Functions, their properties and operations with them.
- Characteristics of elementary functions.
- Combinatorics.
- Classical, empirical and geometrical probability, stochastic dependence and independence of random events, conditional probability and Bayes formula.
- Vectors, linear (in)dependence. Matrices and matrix calculus, rank of a matrix, inverse matrix.
- Determinants, evaluation, the Sarrus vrule.
- Szstems of linear equations, Frobenius theorem, Gauss elimination method.
- Differential univariate calculus: basic concepts, limits and continuity of functions.
- Integral univariate calculus.

- Teaching methods
- Class exercises in solving problems after introductory explanation.
- Assessment methods
- Final written test, minimum 5 points out of 10. The student can also get max 5 points during one semester at seminars. In the case of an unfavorable epidemiological situation, the form of testing may change.
