Course objectives
The lecture “Geometric optics” is based on the utilization of basics geometric principles. In the course the ray optics approach is used, the paths of light rays are followed and image formation determined by how the rays are bent as they interact with optical elements. The scope of the lectures is tailored to the needs of bachelor study of Optometry.
Syllabus
  • Fresnells equation for reflection and transmission, perpendicular reflection, total reflection Brewsters angle. Telecentric lens systems (for the principal ray), parallax. Imaging of points from a selected plane in the space with a tolerated unsharpness. Imaging with mirrors. System of spherical mirrors. Optical aberrations, definition and general consideration. Spherical aberration. Methods of corrections of spherical aberration. Distortion, refraction of rays near to the principal ray. Aberration of lateral object points (points beyond the axis), astigmatism, coma. The Abbe sine condition, aplanatism and isoplanatism. Definition of chromatic aberrations, principles of achromatic lens design. Short repetition of the discussed topics. Final written test. Exercises immediately follow the topics presented in the lectures.
