- Cíle předmětu
- The main objectives of the course are:
- understanding the chemical composition, structure and properties of the main cellular components
- understanding the basic processes in the cell, and understanding the principles of pathology of these processes in cancer and genetic diseases
- understanding the basic principles of heredity - Výstupy z učení
- After completing the course the student will be able to:
- describe the composition, structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- Explain the principles of intercellular communication and cell differentiation
- Explain the principles of regulation and purpose of cell division (mitosis and meiosis)
- explain basic principles of heredity and nature of human genetic diseases, describe basic methods of gene diagnostics
- Explain the principles of tumour transformation - Osnova
- Week 1: Introduction. Basic properties of living organisms. Proteins and their functions
- Week 2: Bacteria and viruses. Human microbiome
- Week 3: Architecture and functions of eukaryotic cells, biomembranes
- Week 4: Nucleic acids. Structure of chromosomes. DNA replication
- Week 5: From genes to proteins – expression of genetic information. Transcription and translation
- Week 6: Cell signalling. Cell differentiation. Stem cells
- Week 7: Cytoskeletal system of cells and principles of cell organization in tissues
- Week 8: Cell cycle and mitosis, regulation of cell division
- Week 9: DNA damage and repair, cell death
- Week 10: Meiosis and gametogenesis. Genetics I - karyotype, chromosomal aberrations
- Week 11: Genetics II - principle of dominance and recessivity, Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance
- Week 12: Methods of gene studying. Gene diagnostics, gene therapy
- Week 13: Malignant transformation of cells. Cancer

- The course is completed with a written examination test. The test comprises of 30 questions: 15 test questions (multiple answers can be correct, negative marking is obtained for incorrect answers) + 15 given terms for a written explanation. At least 15 points out of 30 are needed to pass. The exam tests the understanding of the discussed knowledge.
The exam requires knowledge of high-school biology at the level of Overview of High School Biology (https://is.muni.cz/auth/do/med/el/overview/overview_ENG.qwarp) or similar, and the knowledge discussed at the lectures. - Vyučovací jazyk
