Course objectives
The course aims to introduce various issues of Czech music culture in its historical and contemporary context.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to understand basic regional specifics of Czech and Moravian folk music, become familiar with the names of prominent Czech composers, gain an overview of the current Czech music scene, and more.

  • Ancient roots of Czech music.
  • Traditional music and clothing.
  • Local customs and traditions.
  • Moravian dance and folk songs (workshop with live music).
  • Czech artificial music.
  • In the footsteps of Leoš Janáček (city tour).
  • Popular music in Czechoslovakia.
  • Contemporary Czech culture (including theatre tour).
  • International overlap of Czech music.

Lectures, class discussions, music demonstrations, visits to cultural places in Brno.

To pass the course, student must visit at least one music event of his choice (concert, ballet, opera...)
