In the compulsorily-optional English as a Foreign Language Course B, the students will continue learning selected academic skills (survey, written presentation, discursive composition, summary) in English. Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations, incl. summary presentation at the end of the semester.

Course objectives

Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations, including Summary Presentation the end of the semester.

  • Semester 2 1. Current problems in Czech schools, especially bullying, lack of young teachers, etc. Text 5. (Discussion. Arguing the point. Essay writing. Role-play.) Weeks 1-3 2. Rules and Restrictions, Crime and Punishment. Text 10. (Expressing opinion in writing. Discussion, arguing the point. Presentation - slogans, posters) Weeks 4-6 3. Interpersonal relations. Non-verbal Communication. Body Language. Text 14 (Opinion exchange, deduction. Picture descriptions. Surveys similarities, differences. Role-play.) Weeks 7-8 4. Teaching profession. Learning difficulties Weeks 9-11 5. Gender, race, cultural differences, ethnic minorities, immigration. Texts 8, 11 (Supporting an argument. Problem solving. Discursive composition - pros, cons, conclusions.) Weeks 12-13 Special task: My field of study. Practical lessons, including surveys, written presentations, etc. Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations and for Summary Presentation at the end of the semester. Pro ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné kontroly (ustni prezentace, pisemne ukoly, atd.), jejichž výsledky jsou započítávány do závěrečného hodnocení. Examination: A Analysis of an authentic English or American text (approximately 5000 words)linked to the students field of study. B Discussion - compulsory topic for all students while analysing the special text during their examination - My field of study. Hot issues in my specialisation. Current resources. C Conversation: 1. Education in the Czech Republic compared with the U.K. and U.S. systems. 2. Growing up, growing old (adolescence, adulthood, ageing). 3. 21st century problems (environment, drug abuse, illnesses, wars, terrorism, etc) 4. Rules and restrictions. Crime and punishment. 5.
