Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with reflections on the manifestations of communication skills of children and adults, which arise from the background of various forms of special educational needs, with respect to all language levels; Furthermore, the student will be actively involved in teaching through aids and materials used in practice, and will thus deepen their orientation in communication difficulties that may arise due to various forms of disability and disadvantage, and thus become a barrier during life.
Learning outcomes
orientation in the manifestations of impaired communication skills in children and adults with disabilities;
strengthening the ability to identify communication difficulties arising from disability or disadvantage;
building competence to identify the needs of children and adults with SEN in relation to the field of communication;
the ability to create material to support the communication skills of children and adults with SEN.
Syllabus
  • Development of speech and language skills, symptomatic communication disorders. Models of symptomatic communication disorders. Classification of symptomatic communication disorders. Factors influencing the development of speech and language in children with mental disabilities. Mental disability as a fundamental determinant of speech and language development. Specifics of support for children and adults with mental disabilities in the field of communication. Cerebral palsy as a barrier in communication, speech development in children with cerebral palsy. Possibilities of communication support in the context of modern approaches to children and adults with cerebral palsy based on reflexivity. Visual impairment as a barrier in communication, specifics of speech therapy intervention and other support options. Communication difficulties associated with AD(H)D. Promoting communication skills in children with AD(H)D. Symptomatic communication disorders in children and adults with combined disabilities.

Assessment methods
the course is completed by a colloquium: group discussion of the seminar work (presentation of a case study - impaired communication skills in a child/person due to disability and created material/tools to support and develop communication skills) and final colloquium test (condition of successful completion is 75% correct answers)
