The only pre-requisite is a fast Internet connection and an interest in the possibilities of ICT in teaching and learning.

Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants should be able to demonstrate the following:
1. A working knowledge of a selection of free Internet software tools with a special focus on Google's technology;
2. Confidence in selecting appropriate tools for specified use;
3. The ability to evaluate tools for specific activities and learner groups;
4. Skills needed to keep in touch with the new developments of Google tools.
Syllabus
  • 1. Google Account (setting up an account, personalizing the learning experience with iGoogle, setting up Gmail, overview of Google tools).
  • 2. Google - advanced search engine comprising the following features for making searching and keeping track of the search more efficient: Toolbar, Notebook, Alerts, Google Reader, Web Search, Web Search Features, Special Searches, Scholar, Book Search, Blog Search, Images, Video, Earth, Maps).
  • 3. Google tools for communicating and sharing audiovisual materials via the Internet Including Talk - instant messaging, talking to people and sending files through the computer; Docs - creating and sharing projects online and accessing them from anywhere; Calendar- organizing and sharing events; SketchUp - building 3D models quickly and easily; Picasa - free image management software that enables to find, edit and share photos online; Page Creator -creating web pages in the browser and publishing them to the web; YouTube - a free online video streaming service that allows anyone to view and share videos that have been uploaded by Google members; Google Groups - enabling discussion online or over email, creation of rich webpages, customization of the webpage look and graphics; Blogger - a Google web site that provides the tools for creating weblogs.
  • These tools can be used for setting up a simple e-learning environment for those who do not have the support needed for a full scope VLE/LMS/CMS.

  • 1. Audacity (a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems).

Assessment methods
The course will be taught using the following methods:
1. Independent learning online;
2. Group-work (online);
3. Problem-solving
4. Face-to-face teaching;
5. Peer evaluation of the presented outcomes (in the classroom as well as online during the follow-up phase);
6. Tutor's online feedback.
7. 1 in depth analysis of a Google tool that has not been completed yet + 1 lesson plan/ or 2 lesson plans supporting already described tools.
When the course has finished, students will be required to do the following:
Set up a simple e-learning environment using at least three tools of their choice;
Produce a multimedia online presentation in the e-learning environment introducing their country in the European context;
Submit the URL within a week after the course has finished.
