Course objectives
The students acquire fundamental information on language and linguistics almost from structural linguistics view.
It is pressupossed that students after ending the course:
1. are able to explain relations between language and speech/speaking, can explaint the constructs: sign, meaning, sence (of language utterance), language situacion, national language, communication...;
2. know languages in Europe and in the World and know position of Czech among other national languages in European Union.
3. know linguistic handbooks and linguistic journals.
4. know famous Czech and world-wide linguists.
To end the course successfully the students have to be able to define linguistic terms that are used in linguistic disciplines and have the elementary theoretical knowledge of linguistic disciplines.
Syllabus
  • 1. Language. Signs. Concept, language meaning, sense. Language and speech.
  • 2. Communication. Communicative situation and its elements. Communicative function. Speech and Speaking as a special action. Language, communication and communicative competence. Relevancy of the development of communicative competence for the education and edification. Communicative competence and the Framework educational programm.
  • 3. Natural languages, artificial languages. Dialects. Language situation and its types. Bilingual peoples. Di-glossy. Common European Reference Framework. Europass.
  • 4. Origin, source and development of the language. Classification of the language. Languages in Europe.
  • 5. Functions of the language. Language and meaning. Language and the society.
  • 6. National language and its stratification. Language policy. Cultivation of the language and of the speaking. Czech language - maternity language and foreign language.
  • 7. The structure of the language. Language levels and language elements (phoneme, morpheme, sentence, clause, text). Grammatical categories. Grammatical concepts.
  • 8. Linguistics and linguistic subjects. Linguistics and other sciences (semantics, pragmatics).
  • 9. Fundaments of linguistics development. Czech and worldwide linguists.

Assessment methods

The colloquium is realised in the groups of 3-5 students; each student shall to answer 3 questions (one question of each of the 3 sets A, B, C). The answers are evaluated according to the correctness and to the speech cultivation, too.
