- Course objectives
- Topics from the Czech literature are designed as selected insights into the problematic nature of the national literature in the period of the Enlightment and National Revival. Within the discipline the most significant personalities of the literature in the Czech lands will be presented and students will learn about the main works of individual writers in a broader context of the studied period. Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of literature of the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period.

- 1. Impulses to development of national literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. 2. Literary characteristics of the period, cultural movements. 3. Scientific stage of Czech National Revival. 4. Josef Dobrovský. 5. Puchmajer’s company and beginnings of revival poetry. 6. Beginnings of neo-Czech prose and drama. 7. Josef Jungmann and his company. 8. František Ladislav Čelakovský. 9. Josef Kajetán Tyl. 10. Božena Němcová: biedermeier and romantism. 11. Karel Jaromír Erben. 12. Year 1848 in society and literature.

- Teaching methods
- Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of literature of the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- Students will present outcomes of their work in written form which will help them to enhance their ability to think critically and develop their individual style. Emphasis is put on students’ ability to defend and formulate their views with precision and professional insight. The seminar will be concluded by a credit. Credit reguirements also contain a written reflection (about nine Word pages long) dealing with one of the topics covered in lectures, based on additional reference resources and fiction.
