Prerequisites
The course introduces issues of media and communication via media. The curriculum is based on students’ knowledge of Czech language (its theory and communication practice) and students’ achieved media literacy.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to improve students’ media literacy and critical reflection of media pictures, texts and notices that are produced by mass media, and support their interest in media studies and media education. The course deals with ways of creating media messages, their influence on recipients’ lives and principles of media running. Its aim is to lead students to acquire principles of media communication, develop their ability of an analytical approach to media content and critical distance from it, understand objectives and strategies of selected media content and adopt basic principles of creation of important media content.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the basic principles of media functioning in society, 2. critically distinguish between media genres and 3. critically analyse media messages.

Substance of news reports and journalism. Media and marketing. Advertising. Media regulation and autoregulation. Media products and their import. Media users. Effects of media production. Role of media in modern history.
