Course objectives
The aim of the course is orientation in the topic Down syndrome. At the end of the course the student will know: chromosomal aspects of Down syndrome, classification of types of Down syndrome, features of Down syndrome (physical manifestations, frequent health complications, behavioral manifestations, communication problems). Other topics include support for children with Down Syndrome in education, cognitive functions and communication. Family care and support of the non-profit organizations will follow. The course reflects the current concept of comprehensive support for children and adults with Down syndrome in major areas, that influence their development, education, communication and social application.
Learning outcomes
• general orientation in the topic of Down syndrome (definition, classification, manifestations) • orientation in educational opportunities, speech therapy interventions and therapies • methodology of work and ability to create materials and aids for the development of people with Down syndrome • facilitating students personal contact with parents and children with Down syndrome through group discussions • overview of available literature, internet resources, films and videos related to Down syndrome
