Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to show two world-famous authors - Franz Kafka and Bruno Schulz - in relation to each other and in less discussed contexts, and to open up to Czech students the lesser-known author from Drohobyc through the traditional label "Polish Kafka", which survives in the English-speaking environment already in its entirety.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to actively name the relationship between Franz Kafka and Bruno Schulz, i.e. mutual similarities as well as fundamental differences at the biographical, thematic and narrative levels:
- the specifics of the Jewish fate in Central Europe;
- the body as an epistemological metaphor of modernity;
- not only WHAT, but also HOW it is told;
The seminar will also include lectures, author readings and discussions with guests of the Brno reads Bruno festival on the same topic: Kafka and Schulz - (not) lost in translation, i.e. a lecture on the genesis of Schulz's not/together/translation of Kafka's Process, a presentation of the exclusive bibliophile Kafka's Transformations from the Teapot publishing house, a new translation of Schulz's Mannequins and Treatise on Mannequins in the Souvislosti revue, and a discussion panel by Magdalena Platzová and Benjamin Balint on their books Life After Kafka, Kafka's Last Trial: The Case of a Literary Legacy and Bruno Schulz: An Artist, a Murder, and the Hijacking of History.
