Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to character, nature and specific features of Russian Poetry in comparison with the Czech poetry, with its development, thematology, versology, with everything that practically relates to the theory of verse when reading certain Russian poetry texts from 18th up to 21st century.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student should be able to read, translate, analyze theme and verse of Russian poetry of more than two centuries, particularly Russian poetic classics of the 19th century, the Russian modernism and the 20th-century avant-garde and new development of poetry at the end of 20th and the beginning of 21st century.

  • 1. The origins and the character of the modern Russian poetry and folklore.
  • 2. In search of the prosodic system.
  • 3. The development of the Russian verse: from Trediakovsky and Lomonosov to Gasparov.
  • 4. The specific feautures of the Russian verse in comparison with the Czech: syllabic, tonic and syllabo-tonic versification.
  • 5. From Pushkin to Nekrasov, from iambus to three-syllable meter.
  • 6. Russian poetic symbolism.
  • 7. Genres of Russian poetry.
  • 8. Poetry and song texts.
  • 9. Official and underground poetry.
  • 10. Russian poetry and literary movements.
  • Reading of poetic texts: Lomonosov, Sumarokov, Derzhavin, Radishchev, Karamzin, Zhukovsky, Batyushkov, Boratinsky, Baratynsky, Pushkin, Vyazemsky, Lermontov, Tyutchev, Fet, Apukhtin, Bryusov, Blok, Bely, Akhmatova, Mandelshtam, Gumilyov, Pasternak, Yevtushenko, Rozhdestvensky, Voznesensky, Sapgir and others.

Teaching methods
Lecture with comment, reading, translating, comparing original and poetical translation of the Russian poetry, analysis of a verse form semantic, phonetic and syntactic, genre and movement point of view, presentation of students’ own analyses.
