Course objectives
The Czechoslovak-Austrian relations 1945-1995 were marked by several upheavels characteristic in the history of Central Europe after the Second World War.
Syllabus
  • Among the topics which will be explained by presenting archive-materials as well as video-documentaries, following questions will be part of the lecture: resuming of diplomatic relations in 1945; the complicated development under contrasting conditions in both countries in the 50ies; the Czech minority in Vienna; bilateral policy in the 60ies by employing cultural and scientific cooperation as catalyst; the consequences of the invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and the emigration to Austria; political and economic interests versus human rights violations in the Czechoslovak socialist republic during the 70ies and 80ies; the contradictions within the CSCE-process; Austrian support of the Czechoslovak dissent and the activities of the exile; new neighbourhood since 1989 with the burden of unresolved problems of the past.
