Course objectives
The aim of the course is reading and analysing selected play, usually Sophocles' Oidipus King. The analysis consists of the following parts: stylistic, literary, cultural and historical. After completing the course the students are able to apply those interpretative criteria on Sophocles' text.

  • 12. Final discussion about the text In each lesson: Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the text - analysis of specific morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic phenomena, comments of the teacher and papers of the students.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of seminars 1½ hours per week and homework (reading discussed texts).
Assessment methods
Active participation during the class discussions and the class presentation are prerequisities for the oral exam, during which the student proves his/her understanding of the Greek text by interpreting and translating a selected part of Sophocles' play.
