- Course objectives
- The course of Latin stylistics follows the basic courses of Latin grammar and ist aim is in-depth the linguistic competences, focusing on contrastive comparison of the means of expression in Czech and Latin of the Classical Period with special attention paid to the phraseology;
it is dedicated to the analsis of various types of Latin texts documenting (a) social and functional registers of Latin and (b) the chronological development of the literary language with respect to the later periods;
It cultivates the skills to compose a short text in Latin. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the students will be able to:
compare the means of expression in Czech and Latin of the Classical Period with special attention paid to the phraseology;
analyze examples of various types of Latin texts documenting (a) social and functional registers of Latin and (b) the chronological development of the literary language with respect to the later periods;
compose a short text in Latin. - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- The course includes lectures and practice with focus on comparison of the means of expression in Czech and Latin of the Classical Period with special attention paid to the use of phraseology. Regular weekly work at home consisting of translation from Czech to Latin is expected. Each student must present a paper dealing with the specific literary style of one chosen Latin author.
- Assessment methods
- To obtain the credit, student must actively participate in the class and hand in semestral homework. A written test focused on Latin phraseology and translation of a short text into Latin takes place at the end of the course. The student also needs to prepare and carry out a paper dealing with a particular stylistic aspect of Latin. Topics are assigned by the lecturer. The presentation must be handed in in writing.
