Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basics of Italian phonetics and phonology (phonetic and phonological system of contemporary Italian, spelling and segmental and suprasegmental aspects such as stress and syllabification). The second part of the course will be devoted to the description of the origin of Italian and its development, with some knowledge of sociolinguistic characteristics.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and discuss the main features of the variational architecture of Italian and its phonological organisation; students will also be able to transcribe short segments of the language phonetically and they will be able to navigate the phonetic and phonological system of Italian.
