- Course objectives
- The aim of the seminar is to provide introduction into the issues of Elizabethan theatre studies in the widest possible range, and into the context of the theatre culture of the era. The context is the essential point of departure to an objective critical assessment of the work of Shakespeare, which builds on the work of his predecessors, contemporaries and collaborators. The analysis of the plays will focus on technical aspects of Elizabethan play-writing, ie. on the means by which drama communicates (semiotics of drama and theatre), and how the usage of these principles differs from author to author. This approach is meant to be practical, the aim being to look into the craftsmanship of the professional dramatist of the era and on its relation to the purport of the play.
- Syllabus
- Účelem semináře je uvést studenty do problematiky studia alžbětinského divadla v pokud možno největší šíři a do kontextu divadelní kultury té doby.
