Course objectives
The lecture will deal with the South eastern European cinema from the beginnings to the collapse of communist rules. We will begin in Bulgaria: we will study the poetic cinema (Rangel Vulchanov, Binka Zhelyazkova), the movies inspired by the short stories of Nikolai Haitov and the migration cycle (Hristo Hristov). In Romania we will take into account the genre films (Sergiu Nicolaescu), as well as the auteur filmmaking (Lucian Pintilie, Mircea Veroiu, Dan Piţa, Mircea Daneliuc). The next part will be focused on the novi film and the black wave in the former Yugoslavia (Aleksandar Petrović, Zivojin Pavlović, Dušan Makavejev, Bato Čengić), the types of partisan movies (Purisa Djordjević, Veljko Bulajić) and the contribution of Prague school (Goran Paskaljević, Lordan Zafranović, Srdjan Karanović, Goran Marković, Rajko Grlić, Emir Kusturica).
