- Course objectives
- In this course will be students trained in basic anatomy of human skeleton and will be introduced to anthropological methods used in skeletal anthropology. In the course are combined theoretical lectures with practical training at skeletal material. The absolvents will have overview of techniques used in skeletal anthropology and will know how many information is possible to obtain from the skeleton of examined individual (skeletal collection). And should be familiar with anatomy of human skeleton.
- Syllabus
- Basic anatomy of human skeleton
- 1. Mikroscopic anatomy of bone. Emryology of human skeleton: development of skull, development of axial skeleton and developemnt of upper and lover limbs.
- 2. Skull. Development of skull bones, anatomical description of individual bones of braincase.
- 3. Skull. Anatomical description of the facial skeleton.
- 4. Axial skeleton. Vertebral column, description of individual vertebrae, ribs, sternum and sacral bone.
- 5. Skeleton of the upper limb: clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius and ulna.
- 6. Carpal and metacarpal bones, phallanges and it's anatomy. How to distinguish each other.
- 7. Skeleton of the lower limb: pelvis, femur, tibia and fibula.
- 8. Tarsal and metatarsal bones, phallanges, anatomy and distinguisihing.
- Principia of anthropological work
- 9. Basics of skeletal anthropology Types of burials,documentation, picking up, preparation, sampling, cleaning and conservation, reconstruction
- 10. Sexing of skeletal remains Sexual dimorphism, age influence,reliability of methods. Sexing children skeletal remains, sexig adult skeletons. Pelvis, skull, the rest of postcranial skeleton. Morphognostic, morphometric and histologic methods. Determinating sex by genetic approach.
- 11. Determination of age Principles determining age at human skeleton, influence of age, reliability of methods. Aging children skeletons - teeth eruption, skeletal osification, metric methods. Aging adults - obliteration of cranial suturas, teeth attrition, combined method, relief facies symphysialis ossis pubis etc.
- 12. Stature height reconstruction Methods and their using.
- 13. Cremations History,theory and definition of cremation,preparation and picking up of cremations, how to study cremations.
