Course objectives
The course provides an introduction to the most important philosophical and theological principles and topics which were treated in the European medieval literature and which also presented an intellectual background for the Czech reformation. It enables to closely comprehend the main ideas of the Czech reformation and ideological conflicts in the Czech lands during the 13th - 15th century.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
explain the main philosophical and theological principles in the European medieval literature, especially in the works of Czech reformation
understand the connection between medieval philosophy and theology and the patristic period
analyze these philosophical and theological ideas in the works of various genres which were written or used in Czech lands in the 13st - 15st centuies
know how to identify their origin (citations, paraphrases)
describe the influence of the ideas of the Czech reformation on the following periods
Syllabus
  • The main terms in medieval European philosophy and theology with the accent on the Czech reformation (predestination, Eucharist, heresy, Utraquism, concept of time, kinds of fear etc.);
  • how to resolve in modern research problems with interconnection of the European philosophy and theology in the Middle Ages
  • philosophy and theology at the Charles University in the 13st - 15st century (commentaries on Aristotle and discrepancies between the ancient philosophy and Christian idea about happiness; Lombardus; commentaries on the Bible; ways of argumentation; problems of Universals)
  • Augustinus and Wyclif as the authorities; Wyclif´s ideas as the topic of debates, disagreement and trials
  • reformational critique of the Church and society in Bohemia in the 13st-15 centuries
  • heresies in Bohemia
  • contemporary polemics about the term "Hus´s predecessors"
  • Utraquism
  • eschatological ideas
