Course objectives

Lectures are focused on an overview of the history of Czech literary translation from French since the revival to the present. The aim of the seminar is to familiarize with examples of the main Czech translators from French (J. Jungmann, J. Vrchlický, H. Jelínek, S. K. Neumann, K. Čapek, Fr. Hrubín, S. Kadlec, V. Nezval, J. Hořejší, J. Zaorálek, P. Voskovec, M. Jirda, E. Musilová, Z. Přibyl, A. Kareninová, J. Pelán, etc.), and offer a comparison of translated texts with the French originals (see ELF).

• 1) Introduction to the history of translation, Revivalist translation 1790-1850 2) - 3) 1850-1890 - generation of J. Vrchlicky 4) - 5) 1890-1918 - translations from French in the Belle époque 6) - 7) 1918-1945 - translations from French in interwar Czechoslovakia - poetry, prose, drama 8) 1939-1949 - translations from French under occupation and changes in editorial policy from the period 1945-1948 to 1989; major publishers issuing Czech translations of French fiction. Teaching methods

Lecture and practical work - students will observe the development of translation methods on French originals of literary works and their Czech translations.

Assessment methods

Oral exam exploring the knowledge of the development of the Czech translation of French. In the second part of the colloquium will be verified by reading the required literature. The student must also complete a course in the ELF (e-learning), including bibliography, texts and questions for the exam.
