Course objectives
The lecture focuses on the interpretation of the main problems of the history of the city of Novgorod. It reminds the students of its very special position in the Russian lands and the history, which manifested itself in its intense contacts with Eestern Europe and in its internal arrangement. The Hanseatic court was a symbol of the abilities and opportunities to overcome the negative view of the Western Christians. The internal arrangement made Novgorod closer to the cities in Western Europe and differed it from other Russian cities. The expulsion and invitation of the princes confirmed this difference. It is possible to rate similarly also the level of education documented by the numerous written monuments. The autonomy of its conduct also manifested itself in the negotiations with the Lithuanian and Polish rulers and proposals of its transition under the sovereignty of the Polish king, which were perceived as a betrayal of the Orthodox faith. The specificity of the position the city ended the punitive expedition of Ivan the Terrible in 1570.
