- Course objectives
- The primary aim of the course is to extend and deepen linguistic competences in normative Attic Greek grammar. In the domain of morphology, students learn esp. the optative mood, verbal flexion of the perfect root of thematic verbs, strong aorist and future tenses of passive roots and root aorist. In the domain of syntax, students learn the uses of optative in both main and subordinate clauses, indicative object clauses and indirect speech. Following the successful completion of the course, student will be able to identify and use the aforementioned grammatical phenomena and vocabulary from the Lexis textbook during both active and passive translation of texts written in Attic Greek. The course KR003 Greek Grammar III froms part of the set of basic obligatory courses for the study programme Ancient Greek Language and Literature. Students enroll into this course following the completion of KR002 Greek Grammar II and continue with the course KR004 Greek Grammar IV.
- Learning outcomes
- Following the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe respective declension types of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek;
- explain morphological structure and function of the optative mood;
- identify and actively form perfect and passive aorist of the selected categories of Greek verbs;
- discern in the Greek text selected types of subordinate clauses;
- translate wider range of Greek texts thanks to improved vocabulary and newly obtained grammatical knowledge. - Syllabus
- 1. Revision.
- 2. Morphology of the optative mood; optative in main and subordinate clauses.
- 3. Reflexive pronouns; optativus obliquus; indirect speech.
- 4. Mediopassive perfect system of the verbs with vocalic and plosive stems.
- 5. Plusquamperfect.
- 6. Active perfect system of the verbs with vocalic and plosive stems.
- 7. Perfect system of the verbs eidenai, dedienai, tethnanai.
- 8. Irregular aorist passive and future passive; verbal adjectives.
- 9. Athematic aorist.
- 10. Aorist active and middle; future active and middle (verbs with liquid stems).
- 11. Aorist passive and perfect (verbs with liquid stems).

- The assessment method for the course is a written test that evaluates student's knowledge of normative Attic grammar. The maximum duration of the test is 90 minutes and the pass mark is set to 70%.
