- Course objectives
- The aim of the course, which constitutes a continuation of the course History of Ancient Rome I, is to thoroughly acquaint the students with different aspects of the development of Roman history from the end of the Republic until the birth of the Dominate. Lectures and seminars connect the exposition on political history with economic, social and cultural history, in seminars an emphasis is put on interpreting the most important sources for given period.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- explain the specifics of Romany monarchy in the Principate;
- describe the development and differences in functioning of political institutions from the Republic to the birth of the Dominate;
- compare and evaluate moments of crisis in Roman history from the Republic to the genesis of the Dominate;
- elucidate the process of integration of Roman provinces in the context of the development of Roman foreign policy;
- critically evaluate the fundamental sources for given period. - Syllabus
- 1) Sources and literature for the Roman principate.
- 2) The transition between the Republic and the Principate. The solution of the crisis of the Republican regime - the beginnings of the Principate under Octavianus Augustus.
- 3) The internal, international and cultural policy of Augustus.
- 4) The consolidation of the Principate under the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
- 5) The Year of Four Emperors and the succession of Vespasian.
- 6) The international and internal development of the Roman Empire under the Flavian dynasty.
- 7) The High Empire - the reign and foreign policy of the adoptive emperors.
- 8) The imperial policy towards the provinces, romanization and integration.
- 9) Society, arts and culture of the Principate; the development of the Roman citizenship; the origins of the crisis of the Empire in the 2nd century.
- 10) Political thought and ideas (the Principate as the ideal form of government); the emperors and historiography.
- 11) The Roman Empire under the Severan dynasty - the role of the army, administrative reforms.
- 12) The reign of soldier emperors and the crisis of the Roman Empire in the years 235-270; from Aurelian to the succession of Diocletian.
- 13) Administration of the state, the development of political and legal institutions in the Principate.
