- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is: to explain relevant morphological and syntactical aspects of Classical Latin; to exercise basic grammatical rules; to present Latin grammatical terminology; to teach the students how to read a Latin text correctly and how to translate simple Latin sentences into Czech. Students will also be required to have a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to: describe the morphological and syntactical aspects of Classical Latin; explain and apply basic grammatical rules; use Latin grammatical terminology; read a Latin text correctly; translate simple Latin sentences into Czech. Students will also be required to have a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to the Classical Latin language – pronunciation, alphabet, accent, grammatical categories and Latin terminology; nouns and adjectives of the first three declensions; prepositions; 1st-4th conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, present infinitive, imperative I); the verb esse and its compounds; adverbs derived from the adjectives of 1st and 2nd declension; deponent verbs; present participle; selected personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns; possessive genitive and dative; double accusative construction; dependencies of two nominatives; selected Latin vocabulary.

- 50% lecture 50% seminar
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: regular class attendance (75%); pass two short written tests (the tests results will be added together and the passmark is 65%); final written test (at least 65%); in all of the tests, knowledge of the relevant Classical Latin grammar will be examined by the translation of Latin terms and simple sentences and other grammatical exercises. The use of a dictionary will not be allowed during the test, as a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary is required.
