- Course objectives
- The course is compulsory for students of the Seminar of Chinese studies, but all other students interested in Chinese literature are welcomed as well.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- define a basic outline of Chinese literature starting from the ancient times to the Qing dynasty. The emphasis is put on key literary genres, the most prominent literary figures and their writings (in translation).
- identify the canon of Chinese traditional literature in its historical perspective and in the perspective of its reception both in China and the West.
-distinguish broader historical and cultural implications, including questions of writers' and recepients' social status, the spread and preservation of literature. - Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student will be able to:
- identify the main periods in the history of Chinese literature
- know the main writers and their representative works
- analyze the main trends and genres in the history of Chinese literature
- better navigate within major works of Chinese literature and study the Chinese language more efficiently - Syllabus

- 2. The oldest poetry and canonical books
- 3. Philosophical texts from a literary approach, songs from Chu
- 4. Qin and Han dynasties (history, short prose, fu poetry)
- 5. Period of Disunity (Shi and Yuefu poetry, palace poetry, earliest literary criticism, tales of the supernatural and Buddhist literature)
- 6. Tang Dynasty I (Golden Age of Chinese Poetry and Essay Writing)
- 7. Tang Dynasty II (poetry, highly stylized parallel prose pianwen, travelogues, and the beginnings of the Chinese short story)
- 8. Song Dynasty (ci songs, shi poems, shihua, guwen essays, biji lines, chuanqi stories, pinghua and zhugongdiao narratives) 9. Yuan Dynasty (yuan drama zaju, sanqu poetry, nanxi and xiwen operas, historical novels) 10. Ming Dynasty (Ming novels, Ming drama kunqu and chuanqi, storytelling, short story/novel huaben) 11. Qing Dynasty (fantasy stories, most famous Qing novels)
