Course objectives
This course is an introduction to the issues of research adult education. It enables the students to understand the process of empirical scholarly attitude to reality. It examines the difference between the qualitative and quantitative research and provides students with basic insight into the pros and cons of various methodological procedures, their validity and reliability. At the end of the course students should be able to: critically evaluate adequacy of the research design and evaluate methodological relevance of the research.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- describe specific research designs;
- plan the process of empirical educational research;
- critically evaluate adequacy of the research design;
- evaluate methodological relevance of the research.

  • Contemporary trends in educational research in the Czech republic and in the world.
  • Model of empirical science.
  • Process of empirical research.
  • Hypothesis, verification and falsification of hypotheses. Statistical testing.
  • Operationalization.
  • Measurement, validity and reliability.
  • Main research designs: survey, experimental research, action research, testing etc.
  • Theoretical methods.

Recommendations for students: This course is intended primarily (but not exclusively) for students who have not completed methodological preparation as part of their bachelor's studies, either in programs offered by the ÚPV FF MU, or in another corresponding study (sociology or psychology studies tend to have a comparable standard). The course's main content is the individual study of selected research reports. Teaching will take place in selected Friday blocks twice per semester. Dates will be specified before the start of the semester.
