- Course objectives
- This lecture is intended for the students of microbiology and related specialisations. The summary of history of chemotherapy and the use of antimicrobials is mentioned at the beginning of the lecture. The human medicine and veterinary medicine aspects, explanation of the principles of antimicrobial policy and trends in assessments of quality, safety and efficacy of medicinal products containing antimcrobial substances are included in general parts of the lecture both from the European and world point of view. Mechanisms of action, mechanisms of resistance and genetical aspects of resistance to antimicrobial substances are included in specialised parts. The methods of susceptibility and resistance tests in routine microbiological laboratories together with the performance of the test for specific fenotypes and markers of resistance are provided. The survey of antimicrobial substances according to the pharmacological classes with detail description of chemical, microbiological and therapeutical characteristics is explained. Treatments of infection diseases with medicinal product containing antimicrobials are described. Recent information on the development of the new human and veterinary antimicrobials, the references to the current bibliography, publications and available web pages related to the antimicrobials are provided. Possibility of use of information included in this lecture in the scope of diagnostic microbiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, pharmacy, therapy of infection diseases and legal provisions related to antimicrobials.
