Course objectives
The aim of the subject is acquainting students with the basics of physical measurement and statistical processing of experimental data at experimental problems mainly from mechanics, molecular and thermal physics. The subject is the first of three laboratories for the basic course of physics. Student solves individually 10 experimental problems. A report from each experimental problem is compiled by the student. A stress is laid on the understanding of physical background of each problem and on the acquiring the methods of measured data processing with detailed analysis of random and systematic errors.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, experimental report, safety in laboratory. Theory of experimental errors. 2. Density of solid cylinder. 3. Measurement of electrical resistance. 4. Density, viscosity and surface tension of liquids. 5. Local free-fall acceleration - reverse pendulum. 6. Young modulus and shear modulus, electrical calorimeter, preparation part. 7. Electrical calorimeter, experimental part. 8. Poisson constant of air. 9. Measurement of temperature. 10. Measurement of voltage and current. 11. Thermal conductivity, preparation part. 12. Thermal conductivity, experimental part.

Assessment methods
The measurement of all given experimental problems and successful hand-in of all measurement reports are required to obtain the credit. Allowance to measure problems 4-11 is subject to pass test from theory of errors and processing of measured data.
