- Bi3060 Basic genetics && Bi5040 Biostatistics - basic course
Basic knowledge of genetics and statistics. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain genetics quantitative traits, nature of inheritance of quantitative traits, the genetic mechanisms at the population level, and assess their genetic variability. ;
Students will get an overview and practical skills in the estimation of genetic parameters, in particular, heritability, and their practical use in breeding - estimation of breeding value. ;
Interpret these findings and use them as a basis for targeted improvement of livestock. ;
Link knowledge of classical quantitative genetics with molecular genetics approaches in modern breeding techniques - MAS and genomic selection. - Syllabus
- Importance of quantitative genetics
- Phenotypic diversity and genetic variation - a description of the genetic structure of populations - the concept H.-W.
- Effect of selection and mutation on the genetic structure of populations.
- Effect of migration, genetic drift on population genetic structure
- Effect of inbreeding on the genetic structure of populations
- Fundamentals of quantitative genetics - continuous variation and quantitative traits, ANOVA
- Genetic parameters, their properties and estimations - genetic variance, coefficient of heritability and repeatability, genetic correlation and correlated properties
- Linear models for estimation of genetic parameters, BLUP - Animal Model
