Course objectives
The course is devoted mainly to the students of the Masters program. At the end of the course students should be able to:
identify and delineate sources of groundwatwer contamination;
know principle groundwater contaminants and their physico-chemical properties;
understand and estimate transport processes at sites;
interpret multiphase flow;
calculate flow of immiscible fluids;
calculate mass of contaminants in vadose and saturated zone;
know remediation technologies and their advantages;
make decisions of suitability of common remediation technologies at sites (pump and treat, SVE, PRBs, etc.)
Syllabus
  • History and progress of the groundwater protection
  • contaminants and their properties, sources of contamination
  • migration of the contaminants through the saturated and vadose zone - transport processes
  • multiphase flow, relative permeability, saturation ratio
  • mass balance of contaminants is saturated and vadose zone
  • remediation technologies
