Course objectives
This subject is focused on the field of Web Cartography with primary aim to learn the main theoretical and practical approaches in this field of study. Therefore, lectures are tightly coupled with practice. Student will be able to create its own Web pages in XHTML source code with wide variety of included Web maps at the end of the study. At the same time student will collaborate in more complex team projects from Web cartography.
Syllabus
  • Lectures: 1. Internet and Web: history and its influence 2. Basic formats used on the Web (XHTML, GIF, JPG, PNG, Flash, SVG, VML) 3. Map usage on the Web 4. Map use on the Web 5. Cartographical principles of Web publication 6. Web maps and atlases 7. API in Web publication (Google Maps, Atlas Maps) 8. Client systems (Zoomify, AxioMap) 9. Server systems (MapServer, GeoServer, ArcGIS Server) 10. Actual geoinformatical trends on the Web (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS, etc.) Practice: 1. Creation of valid Web pages 2. Creation of valid cascading style (CSS) 3. Raster map optimalization 4. Client system Zoomify 5. Client system AxioMap 6. ECMAScript 7. Google Maps API - individual and project 8. Atlas Maps API 9. WMS in thick and thin clients 10. GeoServer - project in groups of 4-5 students
