- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to: understand the current state of knowledge in the field of transgenic mammals, explain the importance of transgenic mammals, understand the transgenesis techniques and interpret the implications and potential problems of creating of transgenic mammals.
- Syllabus
- The importance and prospects of transgenic mammals (growth, resistance, quality, biofermenters, xenotransplantation, etc.)
- Recombinant DNA technology
- Gene constructs (mammalian expression vectors)
- Creation of genetically modified somatic cells (gene therapy)
- Creation of genetically modified germinal cells (germinal transgenesis)
- Techniques of gene transfer (in gametes, embryos and somatic cells)
- The relationship between transgenesis and cloning of mammals Model organisms: transgenic mouse and gene knock-out
- Examples of transgenic farm animals
- Legal and ethical aspects of cloning and transgenesis, discussion
