- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand and explain basic principles of analytical cartography
understand and be able to use basic principles and methods of cartographic generalisation - Syllabus
- 1. Principles of the Analytical Cartography 2. Map structures and transformations 3. An analytical approach to cartographic generalisation 4. A map face content classification 5. Map objects shapes classification 6. An Uncontextual cartographic generalisation 7. A Contextual cartographic generalisation 8. Generalisation of topographic base 9. An automated map conflation 10. An automated text placement 11. Anamorphosis construction 12. Expert systems in cartography 13. Neural nets in cartography Scope of practical lessons will be:
- -introducing to alternative GIS software OpenJump
- -introducing with possibilities and comparing of generalization tools of ArcGIS and OpenJump
- -detection conflicts in maps
- -selection of map elements by Töpfer's law
- -polygon borders and lines simplification
- -lines displacement and amalgamation of polygons
- -buildings simplification
- -displacement and amalgamation of buildings
- Two tests will be written and 3-4 elaborates will be ordered during the semester. All elaborates and successfull passing of tests are reguired for acceptance to exam.
- Practical lessons will be educated in ArcGis and OpenJump.
- Practical lessons literature:
- Tutorials and technical documentation for generalization tools of OpenJump and ArcGIS. Other proper literature and sources will be provide to students by Study Materials in Information System during the semester.
