Course objectives
Representative selection of bioprocesses extending existing study plans. Biotechnological processes using stem and other animal cells, plant biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology and enzyme technology.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to orientate themselves in selected modern biotechnologies using microbial, plant and animal cell cultures.
Syllabus
  • Prerequisites for Plant Biotechnology. Cultivation of plants / tissue and cell cultures in-vitro. Explant healing, propagation of transgenic plant breeding. Methods of GMO crop preparation and their use. Plant production of biotechnologically interesting substances. Biochemistry and biology of algae. The use of algae and cyanobacteria in biotechnology. Production of biotechnologically important substances using algae and cyanobacteria. Biofuels, dietary supplements, etc. Photobioreactors. Biology and physiology of stem cells, progenitors and specialized animal cells. Methods of obtaining stem cells and their use in clinical medicine and pharmaceutical industry. Controlled cultivation of primary animal tissue cultures, immortalized lines and animal stem cells. Production of stem cells and their derivatives in GMP quality for clinical use. Differentiation of stem cells into specialized cells, formation of cellular structures, tissues and biotechnology leading to the production of whole organs. Pharmaceutical biotechnology in the production of important drugs. Basic scheme of biotechnological production of drugs, typical stages and their specialities. Examples of biotechnological drug production, classical methods and recombinant technologies - antibiotics, hormones, vaccines, food supplements.
