- there are 32 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and use the methods of reflected light microscopy.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to:
work with reflection (ore) microscope; identify the ore minerals in the polished sections - Syllabus
- 1 / Introduction, origin and historical development of the method of reflected-light microscopy and possibilities of its use. Fundamentals of optics of opaque matter, types of light polarization, light reflection theory, optic of opaque phases, semi-opaque masses.
- 2 / Reflected-light microscopy, description and function of the reflection microscope, process of preparation of the polished sections, polished thin sections.
- 3 / Properties of minerals observed in reflected light (reflectance, index of light reflection, reflectance standards, bireflectance, colour and pleochroism, effects of anisotropy in crossed polars, qualitative determination of the colour of ore minerals, internal reflections , microscopy in reflected light by means of immersion oil, abrasive hardness.
- 4 / Ore microscopy of elements, sulphides and arsenides (Cu, Au, Ag, Bi, As, arsenopyrite, bornite, chalcocite and digenite, chalcopyrite, cinnabar, cobaltite, covellite, galena, marcasite, molybdenite, pentlandite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, stibnite, tetrahedrite and tennantite, bournonite, boulangerite, nickeline, Co-Ni-Fe arsenides).
- 5 / Ore microscopy of oxides and tungstates (cassiterite, cuprite, chromite, haematite, ilmenite, magnetite, rutile, pyrolusite, uraninite, goethite, wolframite). Non-ore minerals in reflected light (carbonates, graphite).
- 6) Development of ore-minerals and non-ore minerals (micro-textures and microstructures), genetic interpretation, determination of mineral succession, ore minerals such as rock forming accessories.
- 7 / Quantitative and other methods in reflected-light microscopy - quantitative reflectance measurement, quantitative colour measurement, chromatic triangle, microhardness and measurement methodology, etching experiments.
