Course objectives
The course Journalism for Economists introduces the problems of the economic publicist's work. In the first part, the concept of journalistic style is explained at all language levels. The second part offers acquaintance with individual publicist genres, particularly the editorial, commentary, interview and report. The final part presents some specific problems of radio and television journalism. The entire course is designed for students with knowledge of economics who intend to be acquainted with journalistic work and to find jobs in economic journalism.

Main objectives can be summarized as follows:

- to be able to see products of mass media communication in wider context;
- to learn forms of media manipulation;
- to learn "self-defence" methods against manipulation;
- to try out creation of journalistic texts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Interpersonal and mass communication. Basic terms from the theory of communication.
  • 2. Language symbol.
  • 3. Active or passive audience? Groundwork of research on media audience.
  • 4. Process of communication, various ways and a tradition of its analysis.
  • 5. Marshall McLuhan and his contribution to the theory of mass communication.
  • 6. Reception model of the mass media process.
  • 7. Encoding and decoding of a media message.
  • 8. Transmission model of the mass media process.
  • 9. Publicity model of the mass media process.
  • 10. Agenda setting.
  • 11. Media and displaying of violence.
  • 12. Media and a political power.
  • 13. John Fiske and Noam Chomsky - 2 examples of current view of media in the USA.

The course has a form of a lecture and a seminar.
The course is concluded by a credit. Credit requirements: active attendance, individual project exploring one of the topics covered.
