- Course objectives
- As a true alternative to traditional public service and commercial media, the "Third Sector" community media provide access to otherwise inaccessible mass communication channels as well as content perhaps not readily available elsewhere. Thus, community media can represent an important component of civil society, and offer a path for individual and community development.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, students should be able to identify and explain the fundamentals of Community Media, and apply them to the operation of a self-sustaining community media organization. They should demonstrate a foundation of knowledge in media management, and employ the nature of media, the platforms for delivery, structure and mandates of community media.
- Syllabus
- Syllabus I. Community Media Theory & Literature 1). Introduction – descriptions & definitions of community media 2). Media Archeology – 50,000 years of communication 3). Overview - history and current snapshot of community media phenomenon 4). Theory & Literature I - theoretical foundations of civil society, community, and the public sphere 5). Theory & Literature II - media theories and research about community broadcasting II. Community Media Practice 1). Organizational Structures - ownership, licensing, governance, hierarchy, administration, strategy, tactics 2). Technics - linear delivery, air chain, terrestrial, IP 3). Marketing - market analysis, formatics, audience measurement, strategy, tactics 4). Revenue - market analysis, people, systems, materials, strategy, tactics 5). Program / Operations - genres, formats, research 6). Country Case Studies - Austria, Czech Republic 7). Digital Convergence - issues and opportunities for community media

- Requirements and Grading 1. Complete these required readings before seminar – Howley “Introduction to Community Media” pp 1-21 – Loeser “CB Introduction” – Loeser “CB History” 2. Attend the lecture/seminar sessions (5-6.11.2021) (25% of grade) 3. Participate in classroom discussions (15% of grade) 4. Present team-based case study of community media enterprise in live 6-minute presentation (60% of grade)
