- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to explain the basic relationships of general chemistry and to acquaint students with the basic structures and properties of an-/organic compounds important in medicine, nutrition and toxicology.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basics of general, inorganic, and organic chemistry in the scope necessary for further study of biochemistry;
- apply general physical-chemical laws to processes in living organisms;
- describe the properties of the major biogenic elements and compounds of importance in medicine, nutrition, and toxicology;
- describe and discuss the properties and reactions of organic and bioorganic compounds important for understanding biochemical processes. - Syllabus
- Dispersion systems, diffusion, colligative properties, osmotic pressure. Colloidal solutions, dialysis. Surfactants.
- Electrolyte solutions, ion activity, ionic strength. Proteolytic reactions: basic concepts and pH calculations, ion hydrolysis, polyhydric electrolytes, buffer systems.
- Chemical thermodynamics, Gibbs energy, bioenergetics. Chemical kinetics.
- Oxidation-reduction reactions, electrode potentials, relation to Gibbs energy change and equilibrium constant. Biochemically important redox systems. Precipitation reactions, solubility of salts.
- Biologically important elements and their compounds.
- Biologically important reactions and relationships between organic compounds (redox reactions, transamination, citrate cycle reactions, alcohols).
- Biologically important heterocyclic compounds (cofactors, vitamins, synthetic drugs, alkaloids, drugs).
- Structure and properties of monosaccharides. Oligosaccharides.
- Homopolysaccharides and heteropolysaccharides. Glycosides.
- Fatty acids, triacylglycerols, phospholipids, glycolipids.
- Steroids. Steroid hormones. Calcioly. Eicosanoids.
- Coded amino acids - polarity classification, pH dependence of structure. Biochemical transformations of amino acids. Uncoded amino acids.
- Protein structure. Examples of globular, fibrillar and membrane proteins. Biologically active peptides. Glycoproteins, hemoproteins.
- Nucleosides. Nucleotides. Nucleic acids.
